I spent $250 last October to play a bunch of crappy Flash games. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had fun on my Nintendo Wii, but after the additional cost of controllers, an SD card, component cables, and the brief foray I made into Virtual Console (VC) games, I can’t say that my purchase was justified. I recognized years ago that platforms, at launch, don’t have killer game libraries, but I’ve been underwhelmed with the lack of solid Wii titles this far into the Wii’s lifetime. The hype, of course, is still over Wii Sports, which still has people sans Wii drooling. Only, as much as I love party games when there’s a party to play them, much of my gaming time is spent solo, and for this, Wii Sports is hardly enticing.
Yes, there was Zelda, touted as a more “mature” Zelda. This intrigued me, but after getting through a fair portion of the game, I was put off by the enormous amounts of immature aspects such as the annoying child-like creature that giggles and lectures you when it’s not making you its bitch. I don’t need child-like shadow creatures talking to me, or otherwise being in my games. For lack of a better word, this is a Japanesey factor that I prefer my games be without, but perhaps this is because I like mature titles with a more Euro-American flaire to them, as my love of anime begins and stops at Voltron.
So here we are, going into the fifth month of Wii quasi-availablity, still with no online multiplayer. At least with online multiplayer, I would get more use out of Wii Sports, or the more-underwhelming Wii Play. There’s still not a decent first-person shooter, and beyond minigame titles, there’s emulated games on VC, the good ones which I already purchased years ago on the original systems. At least there are three five-player TG-16 titles, but they’re not phenomenal or anything, and I can’t stomach to pay the inflated prices most of these games have on their price tag, considering they’re a decade old. Where’s Chu-Chu Rocket? Where are non-Hudson TG-16 games? Where are games from other platforms? Where’s the sports library?
For those of you out there who still don’t have a Wii, unless you must play Wii Sports, bide your time. At the rate we’re going, we’ll be well beyond the six-months after release before another good title hits shelves, and by that time, the Wii will likely be available everywhere. In the meantime, get the XBox Three-Shitty.
Update: Christian over at The Tanooki (a decent site, BTW), pointed out how my October release date was incorrect. For those who will recall, the release was pushed into November, which is when I camped out for one. October was, rather, when people were camping out for preorders.

Is WyldKard actually recommending the Xbox360? Repent, the end must be near. Seriously though, I agree with him on all accounts. The Wii, revolutionary control scheme and all, is quite underwhelming. Besides Zelda, which is WAY too Japanesey, there is nothing, and I mean nothing, worth playing. What is more depressing is that every game worth getting in the future seems to be first party title. Looking into my crystal ball, I see the Wii becoming GameCube 2.0, only the GameCube’s graphics actually held up against the competition unlike the Wii. In the end, you just can’t cut costs to the level Nintendo did and still put out a system that everyone will develop for. In this case they ended up with a great control scheme that will be under utilized because the system just can’t hang with multisystem games. Sorry Nintendo, I will still root for you while I play my 360. It could be worse, you could be Sony.
I bookmarked your blog, thanks for sharing this very interesting post
